Queen Elizabeth II 50th Anniversary of Her Coronation Commemorative Plates

QEII Commemorative Plates in shadowbox frames

Our PPFA-certified framer, Kelly, was asked by her client to frame these two plates that were brought in. The plates celebrate the 50th anniversary (2003) of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1952. Both plates are identical and the client wanted them both framed the same way. Kelly worked up a design that incorporated a shadowbox liner made from Bainbridge 4159 suede fabric mats.

Because of the depth of the frame, where we are creating a shadowbox for a 3-D object, we prefer to use glazing that is anti-reflective.The first three photos above show how nearly invisible the Optium Museum Acrylic, that we used, truly is. It is shatter resistant, u/v filtering, anti-reflective, anti-static and weighs less than glass. It is the most desirable of all glazing possibilities. The frame used is an Omega 83707, a 1 3/16" Square gold metal leafed wood frame.

What is holding the plates in place are what are normally used to display plates on a wall when they are not framed. They are called Plate Hangers. Since these plates are collectors items, the client did not want us to use any glue or adhesives to attach the plates to the shadowbox. This is known as preservation framing and it must always be reversible without permanently altering the object being framed. Kelly used these plate hangers and covered the metal hook ends with heat-shrinkable tubing to prevent chipping or scratching of the edges of the plates. She, also, used some black velour tape to cover the metal parts on the hanger behind the plate to help keep the plate from rotating. A lot of TLC went into this project and the result is superb.

We can do this for other similar objects or collectible items. Stop in with your treasures and let us show you how.
