Framing Services
Flax Art & Frame is the only full-service frame shop in the Chicago Loop. We've operated there continuously since 1946 and consider ourselves pretty proficient at the art and science of picture framing and everything that entails. Below is a fairly complete list of many of the services that we offer:
Installation and Hanging Services
Our decades of framing experience extends to installing and hanging framed art in homes and offices as well. Over the years, we've learned how to hang nearly every kind of framed art on a myriad of wall types (plaster and lathe, drywall, wood paneling or masonry).

Packing and Shipping Services
We pack and ship a lot of framed art and have become experts at engineering just the right box and packing system for your valuable item. We offer this service to our framing clients, primarily, since we are not what you would call "Art Shippers" who do nothing but that.

Shadowbox Framing
Flax offers Shadowbox framing of all types. Shadowbox framing is employed when the object being framed is three-dimensional, or is a flat object that requires platform mounting to give it a deep, box-like framing treatment. We have hundreds of frame mouldings that are deep enough to achieve this.

Canvas Stretching
The purpose of stretching a canvas is to preserve it and prepare it for framing. We stretch a lot of canvases, both painted and unpainted. Depending upon the size of the canvas, we have 3 different sizes of wood stretcher bars we use. We also believe in using cross bars to prevent canvases being stretched from developing an hourglass shape.

Engraving and Laser Etching
While we do not do any engraving or etching in-house, we have partnered with a Chicago engraver who has been doing our engraving for over 30 years. He is an expert at engraving and does all our metal plates. When a logo is required on the plate, he,also, can do 1 color laser etching from camera ready art or pdf's. We are called upon, quite often, to incorporate plates into presentation framing and can handle just about any project design. You can see some of our engraver's handiwork in the section of our site called "The Idea Wall."
